Summary

In this lesson we’re looking at the irregular verb devoir meaning “must” or “to have to”, or in some situations “to owe”. Devoir is another irregular verb so we need to learn each part of the verb as it does not follow the regular patterns.

In the past couple of episodes, we've been looking at pouvoir, to be able to, and vouloir, to want.

And both of these verbs are modal verbs. They are verbs that you can use with other infinitives.

So, for example, je peux venir. I can come. Je veux faire mes devoirs. I want to do my homework and so on.

Today we're going to be looking at another modal verb. Another verb that conjugates in a similar way to pouvoir en vouloir.

And it's the verb devoir. It's irregular. It means to have to, to must, if you like.

Again, we can't really say to must, but it's the word that we use to translate devoir into English.

I must do something. Je dois faire quelques shows.

As usual, we're going to go through the conjugations of each tense here and we're going to start with the present tense.

The present tense of devoir, the infinitive is spelled the d-e-v-o-i-r.

And your present tense starts with je dois, dois, d-o-i-s, je dois.
