Summary

Mitzi Perdue is one of the most widely-respected business minds in the world, having gained her experience through her family-founded empire of Sheraton Hotels, her late husband's poultry empire, and having herself founded one of the largest suppliers of wine grapes in California. She is also the author of 27 books, including '10 Ways To Nurture Family Cohesiveness', 'Four Lessons Your Family Business Can Learn From A Homeless Shelter' and '52 Items To Keep That You May Not Have Thought About'.

Mitzi joins Ellie to talk about not just her incredible journey through the world of business and the founding principles that have kept her family business at the height of success for the past century, but also her outstanding philanthropic work, including her fight against human trafficking. It's a conversation that displays the importance of placing the human experience at the heart of not just business, but life, by serving others we truly achieve success.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Just because we have money does not mean that we need to be wasteful. Frugality is a pursuit in life that should be admired.
  • The greatest leaders amongst us are the ones who empower their people and trust them to deliver on the skills they have acquired. This provides a sense of responsibility and pride.
  • When we find ourselves in a position of privilege, it becomes essential for us to give something back. We can make the lives of others better by simply acting with kindness, compassion and generosity.
  • The depth of our relationships with people is defined by not just the amount we say to someone, but by the questions we ask and how much we listen to what they are saying. The route to true engagement is to listen to the words of others.

BEST MOMENTS

'People have a compulsion to live up to, or down to, your expectations'

'We admire frugality. We admire being ecological'

'A leader's job is to give people a better vision of themselves'

'It's absolutely essential that you give back in every way that you possibly can'

Hello everyone and welcome to another episode of the Animation Podcast. This one you are in for

0:06.4

a real treat. I'm massively excited. I am joined by an incredible lady, Mitzi Perdue. Now Mitzi is

0:13.3

a businesswoman. She's a philanthropist. She's an author of 27 books. She's a professional speaker.

0:19.7

Now Mitzi actually started a family wine group business which is now one of the largest

0:23.8

suppliers of wine groups in the California. She's had her own TV series which has been shown

0:29.2

in over 76 countries. She's a past president of American Agri, which has had over 40,000 members.

0:36.4

She is now finishing a biography of her mutual friend, the wonderful Mark Victor Hanson, who she's

0:42.3

also co-authored the book with How to Be Up in Down Times, which I just think is an incredibly

0:47.7

powerful and relevant title during a very challenging period of history for sure. She's also

0:55.0

doing some incredible work around human trafficking. So, wow, what a lady. Thank you so much.

1:02.0

I love that introduction. You know what, it's quite funny, Mitzi, because so many of my guests

1:07.6

just say, when you hear someone else say it back, it sometimes doesn't sound like it's actually you

1:14.4

that we're sort of talking about. So if the podcasting doesn't work out in a real estate business,

1:19.6

then have it on good authority that I can go around and just announce people do

1:23.6

don't do that. It's my backup plan. So the thing that I did not mention in any of that was the

1:33.6

fact that growing up, Mitzi, you didn't exactly have a regular upbringing because your dad was

1:39.8

actually the founder of the Sheraton Hotel Group. Could you tell us a little bit about your

1:45.0

childhood and where you were growing up or the magnitude of your dad's success?

1:53.2

First of all, yes, I would love to talk about it and know it wasn't a traditional upbringing.

2:00.5

My father was the co-founder and the president of the Sheraton Hotel team. He started in the 1930s

2:06.6

during the Great Depression and growing up as a child, boy, it was pretty clear to me that

2:13.4

that not all my little friends had in their home a ballroom that holds 200 people
