| 1:04.5 | So my father was the president of his teachers union, et cetera. |
| 1:09.6 | And then in probably junior high school, I discovered the poetry of Alan Ginsberg. |
| 1:16.8 | And Alan Ginsberg was a member of the so-called beach generation of American writers that |
| 1:22.0 | also included Jack Harrowack and Gary Snyder. |
| 1:25.5 | And Alan's best poem is this book length poem called Catish, which is the name of the Hebrew |
| 1:32.9 | Prayer for the Dead. |
| 1:34.6 | And he wrote it about his mother who had schizophrenia and who died in an asylum after a botched |
| 1:43.8 | lobotomy. |
| 1:45.1 | So that book made a very deep impression on me when I was young. |
| 1:50.5 | As did actually even before that, before junior high school, I read a book called Flowers |
