Summary

The sound of bullies on social media can be deafening, but what about their victims? “They're just sitting there being pummeled and pummeled and pummeled,” says Fadi Quran. As the campaign director of Avaaz, a platform for 62 million activists worldwide, Fadi and his team go to great lengths to figure out exactly how social media is being weaponized against vulnerable communities, including those who have no voice online at all. “They can't report it. They’re not online.” Fadi says. “They can't even have a conversation about it.” But by bringing these voices of survivors to Silicon Valley, Fadi says, tech companies can not just hear the lethal consequences of algorithmic abuse, they can start hacking away at a system that Fadi argues was “designed for bullies.”

0:06.0	The majority of Brazilians said they would never vote for him and we spoke a lot about basically cutting down big chunks of the Amazon and attacks on indigenous communities and on women.

0:43.8	front row seat to the Brazilian elections in 2018. Our members in Brazil were
0:48.8	some of the first who began saying this thing is becoming more serious.
0:53.4	And although six months ahead of the elections in Brazil,
0:57.3	about 66% of Brazilians said they would never vote for this guy.
1:01.6	What we began seeing was that more and more people were
1:04.8	beginning to support him as the social media environment became more and more
1:09.4	toxic in Brazil. The decisions made in conference rooms in Silicon Valley reverberate throughout the world.

1:18.1	But our guests today can really show us those effects and tell us about the people who experience
