Big Tech is an unparalleled blessing of modern life, until it isn't.

It gave Russia a voice in America's last presidential election.

It's made political propaganda commonplace in many disguises.

It allows terrorist groups to spread hatred and inspire killings.

It is collecting so much private information that advertisers can offer products or customers

never thought of before.

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO and founder of Facebook famously apologized to Congress.

We didn't take a broad enough view of our responsibility, and that was a big mistake.

And it was my mistake. And I'm sorry.

Even Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, says there's a need for government regulation.

Democratic candidates for president want to break up his firm, the first publicly traded company,

to reach $1 trillion.

But does the government have the authority or the financial and political power?

Will big tech ever be willing to police itself?

Siva Vadilla Nathan is a professor of media studies at the University of Virginia.

He's author of a book called Facebook Anti-Social Media.
