Summary

This week we are doing kind of a part 2 on Sue’s emergency remodel and we thought it would be fun to talk about some of the best ways to update an older home. We have remodeled a lot of homes for people and we feel like there is a lot of magic in the walls. It’s really fun to think of the story and the history, and to think about what to highlight and pull away from, and then see what they’re reacting to. It feels like a chemistry experiment, psychologically. When you buy a remodel, you’re buying inherited architecture, which some of it is good, but some of it is not so good, and so it’s really just trying to understand this whole process of putting your own stamp on it and what that will look like to make it feel more you. How to get started 4:30 Paint 8:00 Lighting 13:00 Overgrout, German Schmear 18:20 Railing 22:30 Work with us 30:30 “I’m thinking of more of a mid century, 1950s, 60s, 70s home stacked rock, I don’t know if that works. If it’s a home that’s trying to feel European or something like that, then I think the overgrout works on the exterior, but if it’s mid century, it’s probably not gonna translate the same.” 12:53 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity https://www.alicelaneinteriordesign.com/interior-design-service-podcast-campaign https://alicelanehome.com/pages/home-furnishing-podcast-campaign News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5

When I think of getting started,

0:05.0

because I think that's the hard thing,

0:06.0

is like, where do I even start?

0:08.0

I think Suzanne is a prime example of how to get started

0:12.0

and she does this in styling. She did this in

0:15.6

her own home and that is that she takes everything off. She completely will

0:21.9

empty out the built-ins if we're doing that or she'll empty off the entire

0:25.8

center hall table or the whole console and she starts with a blank slate and when you

0:29.4

bought your 1971 one what do you call it cowboy house I don't know a rambler yeah

0:36.7

cowboy rambler

0:37.7

cowboy rambler dream home like 1971. Yes.

0:43.0

Suzanne took everything off.

0:46.0

Yeah, like including the vertical blinds.

0:48.0

You were like, I don't even need a window treatment, I just need to see nothing.

0:51.0

And the railing to the stairs, which was crazy because like, how old was a menolo?

0:56.0

He was barely born.

0:58.0

He wasn't even walking, but like I still had like a clumsy five-year-old.

1:02.0

But like, honestly, the railing wasn't safe anyway so I'm like

1:04.9

curin or there like it's probably easier just to fall down the stairs without the railing

1:08.9

you know exactly yeah it felt better to my mind because I mentioned this if you listen to last week's episode, you know that this was a daunting

1:18.0

process because like the house, yes, we're project people, but the house was, it's an old 1971 house, not necessarily a
