Summary

These are my tips on Bible versions as well as where to read depending on what's going on in your life. Please share your recommendations in the comments as well! This is just one question from a long interview I did for the moderators of the r/Bible subreddit. They asked their subreddit to send me a bunch of questions and I spent a lot of time preparing so that I would be able to offer the best answers I could. I'll be posting these answers as individual videos so keep an eye out for the rest in the set. I'm Mike Winger and my goal is to help you learn to think biblically about everything!

All right, next question from me, but it kind of highlights one of the most frequently asked

0:04.8

questions we get is which Bible should I read? Where do I start reading? And so the other,

0:12.7

you know, we have different answers I know, but what are your opinions on depending on, you know,

0:17.0

age, stage of life, life experience, native language, mindset, you know, whether you're depressed,

0:21.0

anxious, proud, excited, broken, prior religious affiliation, baggage, past offended or

0:30.0

recent or upcoming major life events, you know, how do these things change the answer when

0:35.1

it comes to, well, which version of all the Bibles that are out there should I read and where do I

0:38.9

start? All right, well, I'm going to give some advice that people usually don't listen to. I'm

0:44.6

just going to acknowledge that right now. They go, where should I start and you tell them and

0:48.3

then they go, I'm starting a revelation. Where should I start? You tell them and they go, I'm

0:54.6

starting in Genesis. That's what I'm doing. So let me, let me say, say this, education levels

0:59.6

a big deal here and it's and reading comprehension is a big deal here. This is not a contest. It's

1:04.8

rather fighting what's going to help you the most, right? So like for me, I don't, I don't understand,

1:11.6

you know, complex engineering. So I would look for a very simple explanation, right? If I'm going to

1:18.1

look for a book on engineering, I went engineering for dummies, like, I'm not offended by that. I'm

1:21.8

like, that's the book for me. You know, I want this simple. So if you're looking for an easier

1:26.4

understanding of the scripture because it's new to you, I'm going to recommend the new living

1:30.0

translation. I think if you're not even sure what translation to use, just use the new living

1:34.4

translation. It's, it's almost a paraphrase. That's the point is it's easy to get what

1:40.7

the scripture is saying. It's very easy to get the main point. You're not going to have all the

1:44.5

nuance there for deep study, but you're going to get the main point more easily. So yeah, you're

1:50.4

looking, when you look at the Bible, you're looking at literature that is thousands of years old
