In today's episode we've got an interview with the military historian, author and broadcasted James Holland.

James's most recent book is Sicily 43,

which narrates the huge Allied invasion of Sicily on 10th of July 1943

and the subsequent battle to capture the island from German and Italian forces.

It's the story that James has explored for the January issue of BBC History Magazine.

And for the podcast he was joined in conversation by the magazine's editor, Robata.

First of all, what was the situation in the war prior to the assault in Sicily?

Well it's a really, really interesting moment because I suppose you have to sort of go back to

January 1943 in the Cast Planca conference, which is where the Chiefs of Staff of both the United

States and Britain, plus Prime Minister Winston Churchill, President Franklin Roosevelt,

they all meet up to talk about what's especially they're going to do.

And there is this real sense that the tide has turned and that their material might is starting
