0:16.6	Straight A Nursing podcast. Today we are talking about stroke. You might also
0:21.7	hear it called CVA, which is cerebral vascular accident, and some
0:27.6	places are calling it brain attack because they want it to be taken as
0:31.8	seriously in regards to the timing as heart attack.
0:36.8	So you might hear it called one of those three things.
0:41.8	And so this will be kind of just a basic overview of stroke.
0:46.0	Perfect information for your medsurge one course and clinicals.
0:51.0	So there's a couple of different types of stroke. You're going to have
0:56.2	your embolic stroke which is caused by a blood clot and then you're going to
1:00.9	have your hemorrhagic strokes.
1:03.0	But most of them are caused by emboli, basically, because of clots.
1:09.0	So one of the things to know about stroke is that it is one of the leading causes of death in the United States.
1:18.0	It is also very leading cause of disability. It's really expensive from a financial impact standpoint for the individual
1:30.4	patient, for the health care system as a whole.
1:35.9	But overall, the death rate due to stroke
1:38.7	has gone down thanks to a lot more prevention and addressing comorbidities, quicker diagnosis and timely
1:48.4	intervention.
1:50.4	So that is good.
1:52.0	So what are the causes of stroke?
1:56.2	Basically, it could be a thrombus like I was talking about,
1:59.3	a hemorrhage, also an aneurysm,
