In 1784, Virginia tried to pass a bill requiring Christian instruction for public school students. When founding fathers such as Jefferson and Madison vehemently objected, Virginia abandoned it and passed a different bill authored by Jefferson affirming

the wall of separation between religion and government in Virginia.

That bill would later become the model for the First Amendment.

Nearly 200 years later in 1980 the

Supreme Court struck down a Kentucky law mandating the display of the Ten

Commandments in every public school classroom because it violates the First Amendment.

But last week, Louisiana enacted an identical Ten Commandments law in Texas will likely pass

one later this year.

If this is so clearly against the will of the founding fathers and has already

been found unconstitutional, why are states suddenly doing this? The answer is that Christian

nationalists have stacked the Supreme Court which has signaled that it is

open season on the First Amendment's prohibition against the government establishing an official religion.
