Summary

In this episode of the Arsenal Women Arsecast, Tim is joined by Women's Football journalist and author Carrie Dunn to discuss the recent reaction and fallout of several WSL players recently contracting Covid after travelling to Dubai during the winter break. What does the strength of the reaction say about our expectations of women and women athletes?

Tim and Carrie discuss the "angel in the house" traditions that govern our impression of women footballers and the idea that women's footballers are and should be morally superior to their male equivalents. Is this an "us and them" moment between fans, the press and the players in women's football? Will the sense of relatability around women's football inevitably fade as the game grows and has that created a false moral standard for female footballers anyway?

Hello and welcome to the January Arsenal Women Ask Cost on AskBlog.com. The best podcast

0:25.5

dedicated to the Arsenal Women's team which we can say with absolute confidence because

0:29.0

it is the only podcast dedicated solely to the Arsenal Women's team. For those of you who

0:34.8

follow Arsenal Women will know that there has been quite a lot of controversy in the

0:38.6

last week or so around players flying to Dubai over Christmas and New Year for those of

0:44.9

you that perhaps don't know. A few Arsenal players, a few man city players, some Manchester

0:49.9

United players, I think a Birmingham city player, a lot of England internationals fluted

0:54.5

by over the Christmas break, subsequently several of them have come back with coronavirus

1:00.0

and the upshot is that most of the WSL games after the resumption of the Christmas break

1:05.8

had been postponed due to coronavirus cases and in Arsenal's case we know three players

1:10.1

went to Dubai, one of those has been named to haven't but one of them came back with

1:15.8

coronavirus and subsequently mixed with some teammates who therefore had to self isolate.

1:20.6

What this is kicked off is a real big controversy about should players be doing that in the middle

1:26.5

of a pandemic and then the knock on effect of having games postponed. There has been a lot

1:32.0

of discussion over this and I think quite rare in women's football that people really round

1:36.9

on women's footballers but it happens this week. With me to discuss, not just really the

1:44.3

incident but the reaction to the incidents in particular and what it says about what

1:49.4

we expect of women and female athletes is author of the roar of the lionesses and the pride

1:55.2

of the lionesses, Dr Carrie Dunn, Carrie thanks so much for joining us again your second time

2:00.4

on the podcast. Thank you very much for having me. Before we crack on I understand you're

2:05.8

writing another book is that right? I am, yeah it should be out before the women's

2:12.4

euros hopefully for taking place in 2022. It's more about the history of the women's game.
