Cult leader and founder of the Church of the Lamb of God, Ervil LeBaron, was facing life in prison,

but he didn't intend for that to be a long time.

He made a few attempts to get his conviction overturned, and when those failed, he resigned himself to die by his own hand.

At one point, he attempted to drown himself by putting his head in the toilet in his cell. Another time,

he petitioned the warden to be executed. When the warden asked if his request stemmed from

remorse for his crimes, Erville said no. That's ridiculous. The fallen prophet explained that he

had masturbated in his cell and that was a sin, in which he deserved

to pay in blood. The warden denied his request. On August 16, 1981, prison guards found

Irville laying on the floor of his cell with one hand clenched around his neck. He left a note that

read, quote, I've gone to meet my maker.

Before that could happen, though, he wanted to make sure his followers remained loyal to him and his

teachings, and that wasn't an easy task. He had already lost most of his loyal followers

during the investigation into his crimes, with them turning on him to save their own skin.

He had lost more than half of his wives as well.

Deborah Bateman had taken off in the 60s, and Mary Lou Vega had never been active in the church.

Delphina Salito had turned on him when she discovered that he had orchestrated the murder of one of their daughters, Rebecca.

Vonda White was in prison serving life for the murder of Dean Vest.

Joy Marston and Christina Jensen seemed to have been able to cut ties with the cult as well at some point.

Irville wrote letters to Rina Shanath, but she was not interested in following any of his commands.
