It is Friday, May 3rd. Here we are, the beginning of May, start of another summer movie season.

Again, things are not normal at the box

office. The big movie this weekend is not a Marvel movie, which has been the norm for about 15 years now.

Last year's big strikes in Hollywood pushed Deadpool 3 to July. So instead, we've got the

fall guy, Ryan Gosling, which is fun and silly and has real movie stars and great action

scenes, but it's only tracking to open in the low to mid-30 range domestic this weekend. Not

terrible for a movie with $130 million budget after tax rebates, but far from the $118 million

that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 opened to last May over the same weekend.

Fall Guy probably isn't getting anywhere near that number, and I think that's going to be a

narrative you're going to hear a lot this summer. Unless there are some big surprises, something like

last year's Barbenheimer phenomenon, I don't think the big movies are going to be that

big this summer. The franchises just aren't as bankable.

But what do I know?
