Google Parent Alphabet reportedly walking away from this potential deal with software company HubSpot.

Hey Carl, so source familiar tells me that rumors of a deal

they were overblown and that deal's been dead for months they say it never even got

to negotiations or due diligence

the stock itself look at it since April, indicated investor skepticism, never

sustaining those gains on those rumors. Even so, HubSpot shares closed down 12% yesterday,

suggesting the software space still a tough one to be in.

Mizuho writing this morning that fundamentals remain challenge broadly and Google HubSpot may create

negative optics for investors if potential M&A keeps breaking down.

As we've talked about often on tech check, the regulatory environment is tough.

Lena Khan at the FTC, Jonathan Cantor at the DOJ, they have targeted acquisitions that would lead Big Tech to get bigger.

This would have certainly been the case in HubSpot Google.

But look at some past deals that didn't go through.

The scrapped Figma Adobe deal, a good example of what can go wrong.

After more than a year of trying to get it done and talking to regulators, they walked away.

Adobe paying a $1 billion termination fee.

And Figma having to recharge its course as an independent startup.

There was also Amazon and I-Robot spent a year and a half trying to do a deal that ultimately

fell apart under regulatory scrutiny.

So if Google, its core business already under pressure from regulators and well aware of the hurdles.
