Summary
Tero Isokauppila (@iamtero) is a a Finnish nomad turned into a fungi lovin' foodpreneur. He is the president and founder of Four Sigmatic (@foursigmatic) — A mushroom and superfoods company that creates products to help you live a better and healthier life. Tero's dream is to bring back the ancient mushroom wisdom to modern lifestyle.
In his native Finland, Tero grew up on his family's centuries-old farm regularly foraging for mushrooms. He holds a degree in both chemistry and plant-based nutrition from Cornell University, and was awarded a Finnish innovation award for discovering that the Japanese matsutake mushroom also grows in Finland.
Tero was chosen as one of the world's Top 50 Food Activists by the Academy of Culinary Nutrition, and has been featured in Vogue, Time, Forbes, Harper's Bazaar, and more. He's also the author of Healing Mushrooms: A Practical and Culinary Guide to Using Mushrooms for Whole Body Health.
In this episode, we talk about why mouth breathing means your disconnected, why Tero started Four Sigmatic in 2012 and what his inspiration was for introducing mushrooms and adaptogens to become an 8 figure business, why adaptogens give you leeway to navigate hard times in life, natural vs. synthetic and the pursuit of truth with science, and much more.

| 0:00.0 | Happy winter solstice, happy Hanukkah, happy Kwanzaa, Merry Christmas, and happy |
| 0:05.5 | Festivus for the rest of us. One of the things all these holidays have in |
| 0:12.3 | common is they are very close to winter solstice. That is the shortest day of the |
| 0:19.1 | year and it in most cultures it represents death and spring comes along after |
| 0:26.1 | winter and has this birth in this growth or rebirth. In the summer there's a lot |
| 0:32.0 | of action and in the fall things wind down again and winter we experience that |
| 0:37.6 | that short year that short day and where we stay inside and reflect more. So |
| 0:47.5 | this time of year is really a time of reflection or time of gathering and if |
| 0:54.5 | you're like me your family celebrates Christmas and one of the things that |
| 1:00.9 | I get to experience is I go know a lot of reflection anyway in the winter. I |
| 1:07.9 | find that as I was saying just a few minutes ago is I in the summer I'm a lot |
| 1:13.6 | more action less sleep, less reading, less writing and in the winter it's way |
| 1:19.7 | more way more reflection and I think that's really natural. So if you find yourself |
| 1:24.4 | becoming more of an introvert this time of year that's normal and that's |
| 1:28.8 | that's good. So honor the seasons and it change and going through life will be |
| 1:35.9 | a lot easier. So one of the little tricks that I do to make sure that I am |
| 1:42.1 | honoring the season is I use as little artificial light as possible and so when |
| 1:46.8 | it gets dark earlier in the day I wind down earlier so I'm much more likely to be |
| 1:52.4 | calm down and do things that are nice and quiet. So what's cool about this |
| 1:59.7 | holiday right now is our we have a really great opportunity because our |
| 2:06.3 | families will remind us constantly of who we used to be and who we were because |
| 2:11.5 | you may notice that they are pointing out if again this is this is all my |
