Today, I am blessed to have here with me Tero Isokauppila. Tero is the founder of Four Sigmatic, a nature-centric Finnish-American company specializing in functional mushrooms, superfoods, and adaptogens. Born in Finland to an agronomist father and nursing teacher mother, Tero was the 13th generation to grow up on the Isokauppila farm. There, he foraged for mushrooms and other wild foods while learning about nature at an early age. In this, he frequently channeled his middle name Tapio, the Finnish god of forests, animals, and mystics. Following his early education on the farm, Tero later completed a Degree in Chemistry and a Certificate in Plant-Based Nutrition from Cornell University. In 2006, he won a Finnish innovation award for discovering that the sought-after Japanese culinary matsutake mushrooms also grow in Finland. In 2012, he left a corporate position to start Four Sigmatic. If you want to do a pure fast, you’re giving your liver a complete break. If that’s the case, you shouldn’t consume mushrooms. If you’re still processing coffee and green tea, mushrooms wouldn’t break your fast. Mushrooms won’t spike your insulin if you’re just doing a water fast, but it’s technically breaking your fast since it is not water. Mushrooms are one more thing that your body must digest even though it doesn’t contain calories. [41:00] The Best Mushrooms For Deeper Sleep and Improved Mood Mushrooms and adaptogens will impact the mind. If you’re in a good mood, you will sleep better. Reishi mushrooms are great for sleep. Another mushroom that is famous for improving sleep is ashwagandha. Many adaptogens will improve your stress levels. When you’re stress levels are improved, your sleep will improve.
