CNN's Farid Zakaria, GPS, one of cable's highest quality news programs and one that often features long-form interviews

and conversations with intellectuals, policy makers, CEOs, and some of the world's most powerful political leaders, including former American President

Barack Obama, Russian President Vladimir Putin, China's former Premier Wen Jaubao,

Turkey's Tajip Erdogan, and the list goes on and on.

But I'm especially excited to have Dr Zakaria on the program today because his 1997 article in Foreign Affairs on the rise of a liberal

democracy and his subsequent book on the future of freedom were part of the core

syllabus in my introductory college class to American foreign policy,

alongside the works of people like Samuel Huntington, Francis Fukuyama, Walter Russell Mead,

and others. So whenever I get a chance to speak with or meet someone

whose work has had such an impact in shaping my early thinking

and understanding of any subject,

not just international relations, I can't help but feel a certain sense of

nostalgia and excitement that will probably come across certainly in the overtime, where we really

get into some of my favorite topics, including a conversation comparing

the ideological planks of the Democratic and Republican parties and their futures, prospects

for international cooperation and competition, the unique challenges posed
