Hi everyone, welcome to the week, welcome to August. It's August already my goodness. I'm going to be joined later in the show by the director of digital storytelling at Define American, her name is Shana Siglko.

And the sentencing of Guy Reffett is happening today. This is the person that the Department of Justice added a domestic terrorism consideration to making their recommendation of 15 years the longest sentence in their investigation.

The longest sentence in their investigation so far back in March, a jury found him guilty on all counts, including transporting a firearm in furtherance of civil disorder for those who say the insurrection wasn't armed obstruction of an official proceeding, entering or remaining in a restricted area on grounds with a firearm, obstructing officers during a civil disorder and obstruction of justice hindering communication through force or threat of physical force.

The judge in the case is Dabney Friedrich, a Trump appointee, and we will see what happens in that case.

All right, text messages for President Donald Trump's acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf, Dong Dong and acting Deputy Secretary Ken Kuchinelli are missing for a key period leading up to the January 6th attack on the Capitol.

That's according to four people briefed on the matter and internal emails, the discovery of the missing records for the senior most Homeland Security officials, which has not been previously reported, increases the volume of potential evidence that is vanished regarding the time around the Capitol attack.

It comes as both congressional and criminal investigators at the Justice Department seek to piece together the effort by Trump and his allies to overturn the results of the election and lawfully block the peaceful transfer of power.

The Department of Homeland Security notified the agency's Inspector General in late February that Wolf's and Kuchinelli's texts were lost in a reset of their government phones when they left their jobs in January.

In preparation for the new Biden administration is what they're saying. Well, he was coming out, we just getting rid of our old phones.

That's according to internal records obtained by the project on government oversight and shared with the Washington Post.

The office of the Department's undersecretary of management also told the government watchdog that the text messages for its boss under secretary Randolph text Alice, the former Secretary of Service Director were also no longer available due to a previously planned.

The obstruction of justice. I mean phone reset.

The Office of Inspector General Joseph V. Cooffari did not press the Department leadership at the time to explain why they didn't preserve these records nor did he seek ways to recover the lost data.

That's according to four people briefed on the watchdogs actions. Cooffari also failed to alert Congress to the potential destruction of government records.
