Potsdam Police are piecing together the final moments of 20-year-old Emily May Smith,

a standout star on the State University of New York at Potsdam basketball team.

Emily, a resident of Greenville, New York, was a dedicated business administration major,

who was already making a massive impact on campus.

But Emily's bright future was cut short early Saturday morning.

Investigators report that at approximately 3.37 a.m.,

Emily was walking on the front lawn of a friend's home near Pierre

Pont Avenue in Potsdam. Out of nowhere, an older model black Cadillac Escalade veered wildly

off the roadway, striking the young woman before speeding away from the scene. Emergency responders rushed

to the location and immediately transported Emily to Canton Potsdam Hospital.

Tragically, she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Less than four hours later, at roughly 7.25 a.m., officers spotted the suspected black

escalade traveling down Route 11, just east of Potsdam. Police executed a traffic stop and

took the driver, 18-year-old Jacob Christ, of Brasher Falls,

New York, into custody without incident. Newly released court documents reveal when officers

informed Christ the SUV he was driving matched the description of a vehicle involved in a fatal

hit-and-run, he reportedly turned to a passenger and adamantly denied any involvement.
