There's a strip in Las Vegas that most people don't know about. Above ground, there's the

image you're probably familiar with. Huge towering casinos, tons of lights, shopping, gambling. But just beneath the surface,

literally, there's another world. It's dark and damp and usually invisible.

These are the storm drainage tunnels that run just below the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.

And for a small group of Nevadans, these tunnels are home.

Just over a year ago, I walked the tunnels.

You see sleeping bags, cots.

It feels claustrophobic as you walk farther and farther into the tunnels and

get away from the daylight. There I met a young man in his mid 30s. I'll call him Chris. Chris told me he was originally from El Paso and that he'd been sleeping in the tunnels for months.

When he said he was from El Paso, my first thought was, oh, you're from Texas like me.

It seemed like he didn't belong here. Nobody belonged there in a drainage tunnel.
