Summary

Mike is on vacation, but I wanted to keep the magic alive, so I went solo this episode. You will likely miss his Jabba the Hutt style cackle, but hopefully you enjoy the mix of heartfelt, raw, and, of course, humorous stories of my teaching origins. Journey with me through college, lay offs, bogus test scores, and the trails and tribulations of being a new teacher.

You'll notice it sounds a little different this time, and the reason being is that Mike is out on vacation in Oklahoma City, visiting his family out there. I don't know why you would ever choose Oklahoma City to visit.

0:25.5

If I had a family in Oklahoma City, I would say, hey, can you meet me somewhere else?

0:31.4

Like, I love you and all, but it's Oklahoma.

0:35.2

You know, I don't really want to go there.

Anyways, he's out there he's doing what

0:40.4

they do in Oklahoma like checking corn and thinking of ways to get out of Oklahoma and uh I'm here

0:49.8

so I'm by myself and I don't really have any um special high tech stuff I just got myself my voice and a recorder and I don't really have any special high-tech stuff. I just got myself, my voice,

1:01.2

insight episode into how I got started teaching and what that was like because a lot of teachers

1:09.2

don't get started the conventional way. I see a lot of

1:14.2

people coming into teaching that had other jobs elsewhere and then kind of fell into it because they

1:19.9

got tired of the hours. I see some people fresh out of college who it wasn't their original plan,

1:25.4

but their field isn't hiring. And it's not everybody like going in with the passion behind it saying, you know what, I always

1:33.3

wanted to be a teacher. It was my destiny. I mean, and there's people nowadays that are still

1:40.3

fighting to be teachers, even though they keep getting laid off. They're in bad districts.

1:44.6

They're restructuring.

1:46.3

Student population gone down.

1:48.9

There's month-to-month year-to-year contracts that are just so politicized.

1:54.5

And I just wanted to kind of touch on that because we just show in Denver, by the way, myself and Mr. D times three, Joe

2:02.5

Dombrowski, many of you follow him on Instagram. If you don't, give him a follow. And we did a show

2:08.7

in Denver this past week and there was a teacher in the audience when we did a Q&A. And she had a very
