Summary

In parts of the country, including states where coronavirus cases are surging, the start of the school year is just weeks away. Yet the nation seems to be getting further from a consensus on if and how schools should reopen for in-person learning. Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, joins Dan to discuss teachers’ concerns, the resources schools need to safely reopen, and what education might look like this fall. Plus, auto entrepreneur Henrik Fisker joins Dan to discuss why electric vehicles are having a stock market moment on the day that his company Fisker agreed to be acquired.

Hi, I'm Dan Premack and welcome to Axios Recap.

0:05.0

Today's Monday, July 13th.

0:07.0

New home sales are up.

0:09.0

Dr. Fauci's standing with the White House is down,

0:13.0

and we're focused on the battle over reopening schools.

0:32.1

So we're now just weeks away from the new school year starting in certain states, but are getting further and further away from a national consensus on if and how schools should reopen.

0:38.4

On one side is President Trump, getting more and more vocal about how schools must reopen for in-person classes, almost without exception. He's joined on that by U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos,

1:18.7

too late, seemingly assuming that the virus would just abate by the fall. Now, something all of us

1:24.6

want, namely kids to go to school and to do so safely, has become politicized.

1:30.2

Not only does that put a generation's education at risk, but it also exacerbates our economic

1:35.3

difficulties, as it's hard for many parents to go to work if their kids are stuck at home.

1:40.1

To go deeper, we are joined by Randy Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers

1:45.1

to get a better understanding of where we are and where we're going.

1:50.5

We're joined now by Randy Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers.

1:54.8

So, Randy, I assume you watch Betsy DeVos on the Sunday talk shows yesterday morning.
