The question of whether a not sandy island exists or existed is an interesting one.

On one hand, it appears clear that it was a mistake. Contemporary scientists believe it was a simple error in mapping and on November 29, 2012,

the National Geographic Society announced that it was officially striking sandy island from its maps.

The case was closed, but was it really?
