Summary

Rapha presents Talking Luft! Talking Luft is back for another week of chat about cycling style & culture, bikes, kits, coffee stops and all the best bits about riding a bike. I had Aussie legend Stuey O’Grady on the podcast last week, and this week I hear a little bit more about him; about his style back in the day, his favourite race, training loops and all-time favourite bike. He raced in the era of casquettes and no helmets and contested many a sprint finish helmet-less – and even admits that it’s mind boggling to imagine that was the done thing. It’s always great hearing stories from the guys that raced back in the wild 80s & 90s – it’s no secret that’s my favourite era of bike racing – and Stuey had no shortage of stories to tell, with an epic war story from the Tour de France 1997. If you haven’t listened to my episode with Stuey from last week, be sure to head back and check it out, there are some incredible stories from his iconic victories in the Tour de France, Olympics and Paris-Roubaix (couldn’t skip that one!). You’ll hear a little snippet in this episode. But for now enjoy Talking Luft with Stuey. And stay tuned next week for my episode of LITP with Aussie Pro with Roxsolt Liv SRAM Peta Mullens. Theme Music The theme music for Life in the Peloton was composed by Pete Shelley, who was lead singer of the punk band Buzzcocks. It was commissioned by the production company behind Channel 4’s coverage of the Tour de France in the 1980s and was used as the theme music for the nightly highlights show. Pete died in December 2018. We were given permission by Pete’s widow and his manager to continue using the music for the theme tune to Life in the Peloton. So you basically had to just convince myself that I love Perra Bay.

0:26.6

I mean, I hadn't really ridden one before.

0:28.4

I'd never ridden on Cobbles before.

0:30.2

So to rock up at your first, you know, training session and go bombing across the Cobbles,

0:35.0

I'm like, this is just stupid.

0:36.9

Like, this is actually unrideable. And, you know, again, the cobbles. I'm like, this is just stupid. Like, this is actually unrideable.

0:39.6

And, you know, again, the team meeting was,

0:42.2

go, Stu, you just get in the first break.

0:44.3

You know, that was my job.

0:46.1

And I managed to actually get in the first break and got caught,

0:49.9

you know, rode the first 100K or that headwind, long straight section,

0:53.8

got to the cobbles and, you know, got passed at warp speed by all the guys and pulled out of the feed zone and just went, this is just ridiculous. Like, what is this kind of race? But then I just had to keep convincing myself that, no, no, I do love this race and I do love this race. And I think back then there weren't too many English stories,

1:11.4

weren't too many English reporters. So they'd see an English person that could speak English at Perubay and go, you know, do you love it? And I'll go, yeah, yeah, I love Peru Bay, you know, without really knowing if I loved it or not. I was kind of forced to take up the challenge. and here in, year out, it was the same people asking the same questions.

1:29.9

And in the end, to, you know... kind of force to take up the challenge and year in, year out it was the same people asking

1:28.9

the same questions and in the end to, you know, also convince yourself and to keep your own

determination strong, convincing myself though I love Barry Bay.

Good day, everyone. This is Talking Luft. Thanks to Raffa. That was Stuart O'Grady. That was his episode

I did with him last week. Go across and have a listen to that. An awesome episode, a great episode that I love doing with him. This is Talking Luft, like I said, and now we're going to get into a little bit more details with him and talk all the Luft and all the funny little things that we do here. So sit back and enjoy that one. Have you heard of Lockhey Morton? I'm sure you have. If you haven't, go and look him up, find out who he is. He is EF's alternate rider. He's an awesome guy. But what he's done is he's

2:19.7

made his sound collection, his collection collaboration with Raffer. It's inspired by the sounds

2:25.3

and the tunes that keep him riding out on those ultra epic adventures. Yeah, I was super happy

2:31.7

with how the seeing sound collection turned out.

2:35.0

It was like a long design process.
