Summary

Rapha presents Talking Luft! Photo: Mason Hender Talking Luft is back for another week of cycling style & lifestyle chat and learning a little bit extra about my guest from last week. Last week on the podcast I had Peta Mullens, Australian champion in multiple bike disciplines, talking about her diverse career and following her passion through the ups and downs in the sport. It was a super inspiring chat and I loved hearing Peta's story as well as her new role at Team Roxsolt Liv SRAM. This week with Peta we dive into a bit of fun with Talking Luft – we chat cap style & kit style – where she makes a damning confession about her personal kit collection, her favourite training loop, her favourite race on the road and trail, plus some incredible stories and a war story from her favourite enduro mountain bike race, Tour of East Timor. If you loved her episode from last week you’ll love this one! Enjoy and stay tuned for my episode next week with Cardiologist Andre LeGerche, where we talk heart adaptations in athletes, heart health with exercise and much more. Theme Music The theme music for Life in the Peloton was composed by Pete Shelley, who was lead singer of the punk band Buzzcocks. It was commissioned by the production company behind Channel 4’s coverage of the Tour de France in the 1980s and was used as the theme music for the nightly highlights show. Pete died in December 2018. We were given permission by Pete’s widow and his manager to continue using the music for the theme tune to Life in the Peloton. To hear more about the music, listen to the Andre Greipel episode of Life in the Peloton. And it was a really hard decision because I felt, again, influenced by the people who had supported me to get to that point.

I was like, well, I owe it to them.

I went to my parents.

I went to my sponsors. I should keep going. But I literally got to breaking point. I was like, well, I owe it to them. I went to my parents. I went to my sponsors.

I should keep going. But I literally got to breaking point. I was waking up every morning crying.

And I was still performing well. That's when I won the under 23 National Road Tile. I was sixth

And I thought, if I'm racing well in winning bike races and still crying every day,

something's really wrong.

1:03.1

And so I just said, no, that's it.

1:05.3

And, yeah, stepped away from the sport for a little while.

1:08.4

That exact moment, who are the people that to help you come to that decision? Like, maybe you came to it yourself. You know, it's really mature decision because not most of us, but I can imagine a lot of people, like you said, you work so much to get to that final position. And you're like, I'm not quite there yet. There's just one more step to go professional, you know. It's just like, I just push through it. Come on. I'm here.

1:29.2

It's like to just go, I'm out. I think there's so many people below you that you think,

1:34.9

oh, what they would give to have this opportunity. Like, don't be stupid. Like, this is amazing.

And my parents actually weren't completely supportive. Like they were like, if you throw this away, like you might not get it again.

You've worked so hard.

Again, really hard again to make that decision.
