I've probably mentioned this before, but my mama went to work at the drugstore lunch

counter when I started school up until that time she stayed home with me and she went to

work the same time that I started school and she got off from work the same time that I started school and she got off from work the same time I got out of school so she could drop me off and pick me up.

So from the first grade through the fourth grade, I stayed with my grandmother and granddaddy in the summer.

Then after that, when she got the job and I went to the drugstore where my mama.

And so basically, I would just set up for all day and I'd read comic books and magazines and then I'd walk around all the stores in town because our town was built in a square. The downtown was a square in the courthouse

was right in the middle. And there was like a Wilson's Five and Dime right next to

the drugstore. On the other side, and they had all kinds of toys and candy counter and all you can imagine of a five and dime. And then on the other side was the Tasko store that had bikes and sporting goods and toys and fishing stuff and guns and all kinds of

hardware stuff and then down below that there was like a bales and cob which was a

clothing store and then they had a couple of jewelry stores. They had a gout and

belts. They had a post office, had a florist, and I'm going in all these

stores. I mean I'm just one and after the other and I talked people when I was in the store and then you know if I got tired of that then I'd come back to the drugstore and I'd read little.

So I'd read little and walk a little, read some more and walk some more and all day long.
