Well, it's happened.

December is upon us, and, like a shadowy horror, pursuing you down a darkened alleyway,

the holiday season is nearly crept up on us once again.

While some people love the sappy sweetness,

giving spirit and good tidings of the season, I've always been more fascinated by the darker

side of the holiday. And no, I don't just mean excessive crowds of people in rampant commercialism.

Other than, of course, Halloween,

"'there's no time of year "'that brings out the creepy and ghoulish tales

"'quite like the holiday season.

"'And there's good reason for that.

"'Long before the yearly barrage of cheesy Christmas-themed horror,

hundreds of years even before Scrooge in his three spirits,

tales of deadly creatures and ghostly visitations were a mainstay of the season.

Back then it had little to do with what we know is Christmas, though.

As the night grows longer and colder, it's only natural that people would gather a little
