Summary

It's been six years since Mississippi State has been able to defend its home turf against the LSU Tigers, but that night in 2017 was one of the most dominating wins for the Bulldogs in the history of this series. Brian Hadad catches up with former Bulldog Nick Fitzgerald to remember a night at Davis Wade Stadium the Tigers would love to forget. Brian Hadad of SportsTalk Mississippi and Robbie Faulk of 24/7 give you the best insight into Mississippi State athletics. We cover the Bulldogs like no one else. I'm Brian Hayden, and I'm very pleased to be joined by one of my favorite guys to interview here on the podcast.

For Mississippi State quarterback, Nick Fitzgerald.

Nick, been too long since we've talked.

0:20.5

How you doing down there, man? Man, I am doing great, and your right has been too long, man. It's always a good time to come on here and chat. Well, I hit you up the other day because I wanted to talk about the 2017 LSU game, and I thought you had an interesting response. You said, you know, when people ask me about my favorite games, this one rarely

0:37.8

gets brought up. Why do you think that is? I really don't know. I think it was, you know,

0:43.5

it was 2017. I knew how good we were, I guess. And it wasn't kind of just like a big shock to the

0:49.5

world. At least I didn't think so. You know, to beat them and how we did it, I guess in my mind, it just doesn't really stick out as much as, you know, maybe like a 2016, you know, we beat A&M and, you know, no one ever thought that was going to happen. So this game, you know, as I recall, and it's kind of a similar situation to what Mississippi State's going to be going through this year, right?

1:11.7

They started out 2 and 0, and you guys beat an FCS team week one in Charleston Southern. You went down to Louisiana Tech and had that crazy game down there with them that had the third in 97 and all that.

1:23.3

And then you come home to play LSU. They're ranked 12th in the country at this point. You know, first full year under Ed Orgeron, talented football team. But I even thought, you know, coming into this game, that this was a game that Mississippi State had a chance to win in. So I guess we'll go back to like the beginning of that week. When you're watching film and you're watching this LSU team are you seeing hey we can play with these guys yeah i mean i i completely forgot that

1:48.9

they were ranked that too um you know i it was kind of one of those things where we just had

1:53.6

such a good game plan um you know Dan mullins had a couple run plays that we ran a lot. And we just,

2:01.2

anytime we shifted into a formation or lined up a certain way,

2:04.8

they were leaving an edge,

2:06.7

like just completely,

2:08.0

completely,

2:08.5

like,

2:09.0

unprotected.

2:10.4

And so we just brought a lead blocker into,

2:14.0

to clear out one person and knew it off to the races.

2:16.9

It was,
