Today, unfortunately, we start with a mass shooting, this one at a synagogue in Pittsburgh, in a community called Squirrel Hill.

Here's the latest as of early this morning. Police say 11 people were killed, 8 men and 3 women. They range

in age from 54 to 97. The New York Times quoted the Pittsburgh mayor

calling it the darkest day in the city's history, but he also said the city will move forward and hate

will never win. Six other people were hurt including four police officers who

responded to the scene and had a shootout with a gunman. Court documents say Robert Bowers kept saying he

wanted to kill Jews. He also apparently posted an anti-Semitic message on

social media just minutes before he started shooting. The AP reports Bowers allegedly used an AR-15 and three handguns that he had legally.

But eventually he surrendered to police and today Bowers is due in court.

He's facing federal charges.

The 29 criminal counts include a hate crime and murder.

He could face the death penalty.

President Trump announced the shooting and called it pure evil,

and said an armed guard could have made a difference.

Although others say not to blame the synagogue that instead stricter gun laws are needed.

But it was the victims on the minds of hundreds of people who showed up for a vigil last night.
