Summary

On this episode of the podcast, Chewy and Eugene discuss a book Chewy has been reading titled “The Pyjama Game” and discuss an idea from the book on the unique take Japanese Judokas take to martial arts.

We discuss how the Japanese Judokas had a great ability to relax while being thrown which allowed them to commit to throws and takedowns with less fear because of their ability to take a throw and survive without getting injured. When this idea of survival is taken towards Jiu-Jitsu, you get to see how having the ability to relax and then also get out of bad positions will allow you to be more aggressive and go after your techniques. We also discuss why you have to put yourself in bad positions, why “looking at success leaves clues,” the rewarding feeling of getting out of uncomfortable positions in BJJ, starting with defense first, common areas where people struggle when working defensively from a bad position, the mental attitude to take into account when starting a new activity, developing timing for BJJ, setting the right expectations, being thoughtful with escapes, how much time to spend training in bad positions, and why you must have a "Jiu-Jitsu filter."

What up, guys. Welcome to the Jiu-Jitsu podcast. And so today we're going to go into a book that I've been reading. So I know a lot of you guys like hearing about the books that I'm reading. And so one of them recently that I've been reading is a book called The Pajama Game by Mark Law. It's a title, subtitle is a journey into judo. It's a book about judo. Now, obviously, there's a lot of comparables to jiu-jitsu. I read the book and every day, I'm like, if you guys are looking at the video right now, this thing's like dog ear to hell because there's so many good little ideas that I took from it. And it's also interesting if you just want to find out more about some of the history of judo and some of the inner workings of the culture, I find that's fascinating to compare it to our martial art and how different it is.

0:42.0

Yeah.

0:43.0

And yet how similar.

0:44.1

And so a cool book.

0:45.9

Today we're going to chew on an idea from it that I think is important.

0:50.7

As we get into it, it's an idea that is battered into everyone's head very early on a

0:56.2

jiu-jitsu, you know, and every white belt has heard it.

1:00.2

We harp on it all the time.

1:01.8

And then in judo, they have their own version of it where, you know, and the guy talks about how

1:07.2

and why, at least in this, when this book was written anyway, why so many of the Japanese fighters have such a different style and a different take and mentality on judo than say some of the Westerners do.

1:18.6

And so it's an interesting book. Worth a read. If you like reading, it's an easy read. It doesn't read. It's not like a fact book, like textbook. It's an easy read.

1:27.6

And so lots of stories in it. Worth a read if you guys want to check it out. Big thanks to our sponsor for helping make the podcast happen. Athletic. A-T-H-L-E-T-H-C, as the name implies it is a THC meant to sort of like microdosed. I've seen it called like the daily microdose where you take it. You're not going to be buzz out of your brain and be slobbering around and whatever else. It's just to help get you into a particular state that could be useful for certain activities. So for instance, they have one mint called flow. And the whole idea about flow is it's formulated to help you get into a more flow state to help you relax that brain a little bit.

2:51.0

So you can get into those states. We're going to talk kind of as we get into this podcast, by the way, we're going to, when you kind of do as we're talking about, it can help you get into that flow state as well because you put your mind in a much more relaxed place. Yeah. And you can get more from yourself. You can think more. But the mints, the mints that they sell are for those kinds of things, you know, and they help you with different functions, different outcomes or objectives. But the flow one, I like the flow one. Sometimes I'll take it during rolling sessions where, especially if I'm playing with something new and I just want to like play. I don't really want to win the role, so to speak. I don't want to try to get any. I just want to like see where it goes. It's, I find it helpful. It helps me get into a more relaxed state. Um, I don't feel any groginess from it. Like years ago, I took, uh, you know, I ate some special brownies and I felt incredibly groggy the next day. And I remember when I was taking the athletic mince, I was like, I don't want to,

2:52.0

I'm really apprehensive about taking stuff because I don't want,

2:54.6

I don't want it to mess up my flow. Right. Of, you know, it didn't. Very easy to take. And again, no groginess or nothing. If you guys want to check out any of their products, because they have several different mint formulations.

3:05.5

All of them have a very low dose of THC

3:08.0

and they have other cannabinoids along with them.

3:09.8

You can check them out at Athletic, ATH-L-E-T-H-C.com. The promo code is Chiu-Jitsu 10 for 10% off the order. Also, thanks to our sponsor, Epic Rold, for being a long-time sponsor of the podcast. They make a lot of great jujitsu gear. I get a lot of my stuff made through them, both for my Chiu-Jitsu brand, but also the podcast. They make a lot of great jiu-jitsu gear.

3:24.4

I get a lot of my stuff made through them, both for my jujitsu brand, but also the gym that I have, like our geese and rash guards and stuff. I get their stuff. Great quality stuff, good customer service. They take care of you if you need something, if something goes wrong. They've got everything from t-shirts and rash guards and shorts. And I mean, everything and anything, anything jih Tjitsu related. They make it.

3:42.3

You know, they make it.

3:42.3

You know, they're one of the manufacturers that PGF uses, the professional grappling uses, to help make their stuff for some of the teams. I don't know if they still are, but they were last season. But again, if you guys want to check them out and just browse to their website, see if you find anything you like, go to their website at EpicrollBJ.com,

3:59.2

E-P-I-C-R-O-L-L-B-J-J-J.com. And when you get there, check-out code is Chiu-Jitsu 20 for 20% off the order. Also, thanks to our sponsor, Charles Webb. They are one of the OGs in the CBD space, the cannabinoid space. And again, they have a really well-tested, well-produced product.
