Summary

Original Air Date: August 26, 2018 Women’s rights activist and international humanitarian Zainab Salbi discusses her dedication to helping women in war-torn regions rebuild their lives. An Iraqi-American, Zainab talks about growing up in Saddam Hussein's inner circle, leading a life of privilege and luxury but also one of fear and terror. When she was 19 years old, Zainab left Iraq for an arranged marriage in the United States, which turned out to be abusive, forcing her to leave the marriage and start a new life. She later founded Women for Women International, a grassroots humanitarian and development organization dedicated to serving female survivors of war. Zainab talks about following her calling and what she's learned about humanity through her advocacy work. Want more podcasts from OWN? Humanitarian Zaynep Solby, for decades, she's helped women in war-torn countries stand

0:31.0

in their truth. Zaynep was first called the action at the age of 23. It was the early

0:36.1

90s during the Bosnia and Croatia conflict when Zaynep read about a massive number of

0:41.6

rapes in that region. Sparked by her personal experience of war, Zaynep found it women

0:47.1

for women international. The idea was brilliantly simple. Connect women in war zones with other

0:53.1

women around the world through letters and a $30 a month sponsorship. Zaynep believes that

0:59.5

honoring your own voice can awaken others to new possibilities, helping them heal and see

that they're not alone. Welcome. Thank you. You know our intention here, Super Soul Sunday,

1:11.4

is to open the hearts and minds of people. And if you can, drop little pieces of light into

1:18.2

their lives so that they see themselves differently and see the world differently. And I know that,

1:24.8

you know, when you found it women for women international, that might not have been your

1:30.4

specific intention, but that's exactly what you did. You opened hearts and minds, you dropped

1:36.6

pieces of light into women's lives by letting them share their stories, and that became its own

1:45.1

force of empowerment. How did you know to do that? Well, it all started by me being in war.

1:52.2

I grew up in war, in the Iran-Iraq war, in Zilirak, and I know one thing about war. It makes you feel

1:58.3

isolated. It makes you feel that the world has forgotten about you. Absolutely. So you decided,

2:05.6

all right, I'm going to find out where Bosnian is and I'm going to do what? What was the initial

2:11.6

feeling? I was newly married at the time. We were going to go to Spain for our honeymoon.
