The entire nation has been stirred in the last few days as pictures appearing in current magazines

of families reunited by returning American prisoners of war.

These heroic men who have suffered more than we can ever imagine deserve the best.

However, no matter how terrible the agony and torment these men might have endured, it cannot

compare with the agony of heart that hundreds of mothers have endured as a result of this

Korean War.

Many have received telegrams from the war department saying their son was missing in action.

They have followed the hours and days of uncertainty,

and inward pain that only a mother can know.

Others have received telegrams saying their son was killed in action.

And today, we remember the gold star mothers

who have given their sons in Korea and in other wars.

You have given most to your country,

and we Americans thank you today from the

bottom of our hearts for the great sacrifice you have made to the cause of freedom. Today,

our entire nation is honoring the dignity and sanctity of the American woman. Whether you women

realize it or not, you owe everything you have to Jesus Christ. Only in Christianity have women been

lifted to a true equality with men. In many parts of the world, women are still considered

almost a beast of burden. It was Christ who valued womanhood. The Bible is full of stories of
