I'm Elizabeth Slattery and welcome to SCOTUS 101, where we break down what's happening at the Supreme Court, what the justices are up to, and other things related to our favorite branch of government.

This is a special summer session edition of SCOTUS 101, and today I'm joined by the lovely Carrie Severino, who is Chief Counsel for the Judicial Crisis Network.

Carrie, welcome back to SCOTUS 101.

0:22.6

Great to be here.

0:23.8

So some very serious allegations have been made against Judge Kavanaugh.

0:27.6

A woman named Christine Blaise Ford says she was assaulted when she was a teenager in the early 80s, and she says it was Brett Kavanaugh.

0:34.9

Now, I think she should be treated with respect, and she deserves an opportunity to be heard, but I don't think she's entitled to our blind faith that everything

1:25.9

she said, you know, yesterday that she wants to

1:29.4

testify and certainly the Democrats have been calling for public hearings and then so,

1:34.9

so Grassley is happy to do that. Now, unfortunately, that he has scheduled a public hearing,

1:39.8

you know, a day later things seem to have changed, and it's not clear yet whether she will

1:44.6

testify. You know, we'll see how that goes, but I have to commend Senator Grassley for

1:49.5

doing everything he can to show her respect, but also to make sure that Judge Kavanaugh is afforded

1:54.7

a fair opportunity to refute those allegations because he has been unequivocal and very clear
