Summary

Alison and Timothy discuss The Year Without a Summer – 1816 – which found Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin (soon to be Shelley), Claire Clairmont, Dr. Polidori, Percy Shelley, and Lord Byron together in Switzerland. The eruption of Mount Tamboro in Indonesia caused clouds of ash to darken the skies over Europe. These remarkable events birthed the creation of Polidori’s story, The Vampyre (which inspired Dracula), and the incredible novel, Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. I was working on a project that deals with William Rosetti, who was one of the pre-rapheolate brotherhoods. If you're unfamiliar with the pre-rapheolate brotherhood, they were a group of artists who formed in the late 1840s and are responsible for...

What's probably more well known are these beautiful pictures of classic...

2:31.7

It's often like medieval maidens. It's a very beautiful...

2:34.7

Yeah, and in this earliest incarnation of the classic seven pre-rapheolate artists, a lot of them have to do with working conditions too.

2:42.7

They're pretty ahead of the curve as far as they're thinking they were derided by a lot of critics at the time.

2:47.7

But their works sort of extended and the generations of people became enamored with the pre-rapheolates and went on to work in that sort of style.

2:56.7
