It is the best of times. It is the worst of times. In other words, it's like all other times.

And yet I was reading that. Suicide rates are at their highest level in a very long time in America.

Mainly males are committing suicide. Predominantly white males. And we kind of know why you don't have to read a book on it.

Suicide amongst males. Four times higher than among women. Male deaths representing 79% of all US suicides.

And there are reasons for this. Why? You could probably figure it out for yourself. You could say it's a lack of religion to start with, which is 100% true to a certain extent.

Because there's not a religion on earth that condone suicide. All religions consider committing suicide one of the greatest sins, including Islam.

Committing suicide is one of the greatest sins that Islam banned. It's even greater than murder. Judaism. Suicide. Jewish law. Very serious offense. Christianity. Serious offense.

Buddhism does not condone suicide. Many idiots in Marin County think they're Buddhist. They don't know what even what Buddhism is.

They put their hands in front of themselves when they ask for glass of water in a Chinese restaurant. And they think they're Buddhists.

Buddhism condemns it. Hinduism condemns it. But I don't want to go into only the religion part. What I intend to do for you today is talk about civilization and its discontents. Why?

Well, let me go back a bit. First of all, you listening to the Savage seminar in graduate studies in many areas. And today I want to talk about a subject that maybe you touched on in college, maybe you never went to college.
