Summary
Dozens of flights and ferry sailings have been cancelled due to strong winds and heavy rain. British Airways cancelled its first wave of domestic departures, while Aer Lingus Regional has grounded many flights between Great Britain and the island of Ireland – Belfast City and Dublin. Most Irish Sea ferry sailings are cancelled. And on the trains, ScotRail has imposed speed restrictions on lines to Carlisle, Inverness and beyond.

| 0:00.0 | Hello and welcome to today's independent travel podcast with me, Simon Calder. It's Tuesday the night of December. |
| 0:07.1 | All through this month, I was hoping to bring you tidings of comfort and joy about all the |
| 0:12.9 | marvellous travel opportunities coming up in the year ahead. But I have to interrupt that sequence |
| 0:18.8 | just to bring you the latest that is happening this morning |
| 0:23.0 | as Storm Bram sweeps in. |
| 0:27.0 | What's happened overnight is that the Met Office has stepped up some weather warnings |
| 0:31.6 | so that there are now amber warnings for wind and rain, particularly in Western Scotland, in northwest, northern Ireland, |
| 0:41.1 | also patches in South Wales and Southwest England. And the picture is that, well, there is |
| 0:48.0 | disruption on trains, boats and planes. Let's begin in the skies. British Airways has cancelled the entire first wave |
| 0:58.1 | of departures from London Heathrow to Belfar City, Dublin, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Manchester. |
| 1:04.5 | And of course, the corresponding inbound flights are also grounded. That's 10 flights. Let's say |
| 1:10.5 | 1,500 people affected. |
| 1:13.2 | The worst hit airport, though, is Belfast City. At least 18 departures and arrivals are grounded |
| 1:21.3 | on Tuesday, most of them on Air Lingus Regional. And if you were hoping to get to and from Leeds Bradford or Birmingham, |
| 1:29.8 | there are multiple cancellations on those routes. |
| 1:33.8 | Some travellers hoping to get between Northern Ireland and Great Britain might think, |
| 1:38.6 | well, I'll go to Dublin instead. Don't do that. Many flights across the IRC are cancelled as well as links with |
| 1:46.2 | Paris and Amsterdam. Oddly, perhaps given the weather warnings, the early departure from |
| 1:53.5 | City of Derry Airport to London Heathrow took off on time. That was Loganair, but the airline is also offering passengers booked on flights on |
| 2:03.8 | Tuesday and Wednesday the chance to postpone their journeys in order to get some certainty. |
| 2:11.6 | So much for aviation, if you think, well, I'll just go for ferries. I'm afraid you're not going to |
| 2:17.0 | have much luck across the Irish Sea'll just go for ferries. I'm afraid you're not going to have much luck |
