U.S. stocks edged higher today. The S&P 500 and the Dow rose 0.2%. The NASDAQ gained 0.3%. The dollar

weakened against other major currencies, while gold and silver futures both jumped to new records.

Investors weighed comments from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, who said President Trump

is pressuring the Fed to cut interest rates with the threat of a criminal indictment that

revived concerns over central bank independence. Among individual companies, synchrony financial shares slid 8%. The stock fell after

President Trump called for a cap on credit card interest rates. Capital One financial stock lost 6%.

The lender agreed to pay a $425 million settlement over claims it misled consumers about a high-yield

savings program.
