I'm a retired police officer. Did 28 years with Long Beach

California PD. And while I was there, I was a canine handler for six years, I was the sergeant

of the canine unit for another three, and then later in my career, I was promoted to Commander,

and I was in charge of, among other things, Homeland Security and Counterterrorism.

So, because of that, I had a security clearance. Well, we, back when I was a sergeant, we

headed the gun, this bloodhound trailing program, and he was involved, my handler, and the dog.

We're involved in some work that was classified with the FBI and other government agencies,

and so they said, Steve, I need you to take over just this little piece of canine, because

his sergeant and his lieutenant can't know, they don't have security clearance, they can't know

what he's doing, we need to know what's going on. I said sure no problem. So, I've bounced

around the bloodhound program twice, and sometime during the time I was gone, they started working

with regular dogs, German shepherds, Belgian malinwoss, to do the same kind of work, and they did it,

they did it okay, not nearly as well as bloodhound, but they still did good work, and it was

acceptable levels. All of our work that we did was studied by a university out of Florida,

and they put it all into different papers to reviewed papers, acknowledging the level of confidence

that you could achieve with a good working dog. You know, it takes a certain person to do some

of those things that you guys do, but can I ask you like, what's the worst thing you've ever seen

without getting to graphic? Well, a lot, unfortunately, Long Beach is a fairly large city,

almost half a million people nowadays. Probably, you know, I've seen a lot of murders,

as a pro-luster, Long Beach is a little different than a lot of agencies, some agencies, they'll just

say, okay, you show up, secure the scene, call homicide. Well, in Long Beach,
