Summary

Few Britons are as iconic as Stephen Fry.

On TV, he's an Emmy-winning comedy legend immortalised in shows like A Bit of Fry & Laurie, Jeeves & Wooster, and Blackadder. He has hosted the British Academy Film Awards twelve times and won six BAFTAs as the host of the smash-hit BBC television quiz show Q.I.

On stage, Stephen's adaptation of Me and My Girl won two Olivier Awards. He was nominated for a Tony for his performance in The Globe's production of Twelfth Night on Broadway.

On the big screen, he's starred in Wilde (as Oscar Wilde, a performance nominated for a Golden Globe), Gosford Park, Chariots of Fire, A Fish Called Wanda, V for Vendetta and The Hobbit.

Stephen is the voice of all the Harry Potter audiobooks. His eloquence infuses his countless essays, comedy sketches, articles, novels, and books about Greek mythology.

His autobiography, Moab is My Washpot, with its raw honesty about his screwed-up teenage years, was transformational for a young Josh Szeps.

On a recent trip to Sydney, Stephen swung by the Uncomfortable Conversations studios to visit with Josh. Enjoy this sparkling conversation about the cycle of life, the richness of being human, finding creative authenticity, and ignoring Donald Trump.

Gatay humans. Welcome to the safe space for dangerous ideas. And there are very few people alive today

0:08.6

who I could comfortably call heroes of mine. But Stephen Fry is one of them. One of the most

0:16.0

articulate, eloquent, wise and funny people alive. I grew up watching his sketch comedy show,

0:22.7

A Bit of Fry and Lorry, as well as Blackadder, one of the funniest television

0:26.8

comedies ever made. He's also known for Jeeves and Worcester and a bazillion other things that I

0:31.2

won't even begin to try to recite. Suffice to say that he's won an Emmy, he's won six

0:36.9

BAFTAs, that's for his hosting of the

0:38.8

brilliant BBC television quiz show QI, which manages to both be smart and also extremely funny.

0:47.3

On stage, Stephen adapted me and my girl, he won two Olivier Awards, or the show did, rather.

0:53.3

He was nominated for a Tony for his role in 12th Night on Broadway, which was a Shakespeare

0:58.4

The Globe Theatre production.

1:00.8

On the big screen, he's starred in a number of movies.

1:03.3

He was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance of Oscar Wilde in the biopic Wilde.

1:09.6

He was in Gosford Park and a fish called Wanda, V for Vendetta, and The Hobbit.

1:15.0

He is the voice of all of the Harry Potter audiobooks and also the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

1:20.0

So if you know him from nothing else but you have children who have listened to the Harry Potter audiobooks,

1:25.0

then he has spent a long time in somebody's brain. And his autobiography,

1:30.3

which is called Moab is My Washpot, was incredibly powerful to me as a teenager. I read it and

1:36.9

it's rawness, it's honesty, it's humor and it's sort of whimsy about how screwed up he was

1:43.4

as a teenager.

1:44.9

I found extremely reassuring.

1:47.7

On a recent trip to Sydney, Stephen was kind enough to swing by the Uncomfortable Conversations
