Today we're talking about house plants, or should I call them indoor plants? For many years,

this rather loosely defined group of plant species was much maligned. House plants have been considered a little marmite. Some love them, some hated them. They languished under the reputation of being

unfashional, a bit 1970s or granny-ish. In recent years I'm pleased there's

been a resurgence and it's safe to say that my delight in this relationship is shared by

thousands of secret houseplant lovers around the country, including those gathered around the table

here today. So-called houseplants include many fabulous species from all over the globe, from colourful

exotics, delicate orchids, carnivorous jungle monsters to ethereal air plants. There really is

something to please everyone's taste. But many people shy away from growing houseplants after

one too many dead ferns, problems with scorch leaves, aphid problems and mealy bugs.
