Summary

This week I interview Dave Perkins, one of the members of the family that owns Orvis and Executive Vice Chairman of Orvis. Dave is one of the most well-traveled and experienced fly fishers I know, but he still enjoys fishing close to home as well. In this case he is sharing his tips on catching Eastern, lake-run steelhead from smaller Great Lakes tributaries. Dave has been doing this for many years so his tips are solid and helpful.

In the fly box, we talk about the ethics of fishing for spawning fish, how many turns to take on a clinch knot, tips on making dubbed bodies, Mysis shrimp, and use of sinking lines for nymph fishing.

Hi and welcome to the Orbis Fly Fishing Guide podcast. This podcast is being

recorded on December 2nd 2014. I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and hope you're getting out fishing or if not fishing at

0:38.8

least time flies or thinking about fishing. Let's start today's podcast with a phone call from Ralph from New Jersey.

0:48.4

Ralph doesn't have a question, he actually has a comment, it's a good suggestion.

0:52.0

So Ralph, hey Tom, this is Rob from New Jersey. Just one

0:56.1

comment on your podcast mailbox answer in response to the questions on sunglasses and specifically the frame type.

1:06.0

While I heard you mention that frame type is totally a matter of personal preference and I agree

1:11.0

to an extent and this should be obvious to anyone who

1:15.6

actually goes shopping for different sunglasses so nothing is

1:18.8

revolutionary but clearly a wrap around and certainly in my case where fishing assault I'm out in the open all the time

1:27.7

it may be less of an issue for those freshwater anglers who are in more of an enclosed

1:32.1

embankment.

1:34.0

But in open spaces, there are absolutely times early in the day,

1:39.6

late in the day, any time where the sun angle is such that you can have that sun coming in and around the

1:46.1

frame, that a wrap-around is vastly superior. There's different designs, some have the little flaps on the end, some are just by nature of a larger lens, you know, just more surface there in front of your eyes. Others have a slight curve, but I would really encourage anybody who

2:05.9

fishes open spaces to use a wrap around at some sort, certainly a larger lens. That was it, I guess it's

2:14.4

nitpicky, but appreciate everything. Love the podcast. Take care.

2:19.2

So Ralph, that's that's terrific and I'm glad you mentioned that one of the caveats that I might

2:25.9

mentioned is that if you're like me and you have a strong prescription
