It's kind of common that elections in American history get called the most important election of our lifetime.

Here's a paper from 1864, the Pittsburgh Post.

The election today, unless we are more mistaken than we ever were in our life, the people

feel the importance of today's contest, as they have never felt in relation to any previous election. The main issue involved in it is

so momentous as to both interest and alarm us all. It is no less than the preservation of our country and with it the preservation of our liberties.

That's from the Pittsburgh Post-84 Democratic Leaning newspaper but the Republican

leaning newspapers of that time were saying about the same thing hint hint
