Welcome to On Topic, a weekly in-depth look at a topic that helps us understand the

week's news. My name is Renato Mariati. I'm a former federal prosecutor, a practicing lawyer, and a

CNN legal analyst. And I'm joined by my friend Patty Vasquez, a WGM radio host who will join us regularly on this podcast.

So Patty, I don't know about you, but I suffered through the State of the Union address this week.

I have to admit that, you know, it's not, you know, I'm somebody who tries to be informed

about what's going on in the country but you know a lot of a lot of that

speech I felt like I was becoming less informed by watching it well some of it

becomes a rally especially when people are chanting, you know, USA,

like we're at a sporting event or something, gets strange for sure.

Yeah, you know, it was interesting. You know, I was, you know, I've always, I've been wondering and I've been watching how the press has covered

Trump and a lot of the false statements that he makes.

And that's been evolving over time and you

know one thing I thought that I thought was interesting is that a fact-checker I

really respect who we were actually going to be bringing in shortly
