Summary

Ari Wasserman of The Athletic joins Andy to discuss the idea that the Superteam Era might be over. Michigan's win against Alabama showed that a team that doesn't stack top-five recruiting classes can beat one that does when a national title shot is on the line. That probably wasn't true five years ago, but changes in the sport (transfer rules, NIL) have made it possible to build a deep roster without being a perennial high school recruiting juggernaut. That brings up an interesting question. With the 12-team College Football Playoff starting next season, how many teams will enter the season with a real chance at making a national title run. It's a LOT more than it would have been in 2019.  Today's show is sponsored by PrizePicks, the easiest way to play daily fantasy. Welcome to Andy Staples on three. Very, very special show for you. It's a dear Andy show.

0:08.1

We've got your questions and you have some great ones, including one involving mascot fights,

0:13.3

which I cannot wait to answer. But we have another special treat for you. My former tag team

0:19.9

partner Ari Wasserman joins me because

0:21.9

we had to talk about the column that he put up on the athletic on Wednesday where he said

0:29.0

maybe stars don't matter. I mean, when you change your entire life ethos, that requires an

0:35.1

explanation. So it is a really good discussion because i do think college

0:41.1

football has changed considerably over the last few years and ri breaks it down really well in that

0:46.4

column and so he and i are going to talk about everything that's changed what it means now who can

0:52.0

win the national title now who can win the national title next

0:55.6

season that list i think could be pretty long and arie does a really good job explaining

1:01.6

why he's kind of changed his mind on this and uh for mr stars matter that's a it's a pretty big

1:08.0

and bold move but before we get to that we got to talk some changes on

1:13.7

coaching staffs the mini's true version north carolina fires jean chiswick defensive coordinator

1:19.1

and defensive line coach tim cross we we figured that mac brown was going to part ways with

1:24.0

chiswick there were some questions going into the bowl game where it was kind of

1:28.6

hinted at that this was coming. It just, you know, Chisick came back from working in TV for a while,

1:34.8

just like Mac Brown did. But Chisick, other than the very beginning of this season, it just

1:39.8

never seemed to quite work out. That was the smaller version of the staff changes. The bigger one was at

1:45.2

LSU where Brian Kelly, clean house, pardon the pun, Matt House, the defensive coordinator

1:51.4

was fired at a cost of $6 million in buyout money. And then also corners coach Robert Steeple,

1:59.6

safety's coach, Kerry Cooks, D-Line coach Jimmy Lindsay, also fired.
