Summary

Hello and welcome back to Equity, a podcast about the business of startups, where we unpack the numbers and nuance behind the headlines. As you can tell by the headline of this episode, this is a bonus episode all about Y Combinator Demo Day (and the terms we heard most often during the two-day affair). Natasha and Alex jumped on Twitter Spaces to talk through our favorites of the batch, geography changes, and diversity shake-up that included less women getting funded batch over batch. Below are some of the posts we pulled from: The biggest moonshots in YC’s S22 batch Our 11 favorite companies from YC’s S22 Demo Day: Part 1  Our 10 favorite startups from YC’s S22 Demo Day: Part 2 Delving into YC’s diversity data following a category shakeup Where is Y Combinator startup-hunting in 2022? Hello and welcome back to Equity, a podcast about the business of startups where we

0:14.3

unpack the numbers and nuance behind the headlines. I am Natasha Masqueriness and I am

0:18.5

joined by the one and only Alex Wilhelm. Alex how are you? You know I knew this week was going to be like standing in the

0:24.7

middle of a sandstorm while not wearing clothes and it's been roughly that and I feel

0:28.1

fine actually. I feel like I've gotten through the hard bits and life's good now.

0:31.2

I think this is growth because in the past I think we

0:34.0

would have defined our value as being like busy, productive people, killing it on

0:38.7

traffic and right now we're doing all those things but we're kind of like tired

0:41.7

so I think it's growth and we are

0:43.5

expanding our definition of success. Natasha just described getting older and

0:48.8

calling growth which I think is perfectly fine. It's reasonable.

0:52.6

But I will say I am slightly less tired

0:54.9

this YC demo day because there were strictly fewer companies.

0:57.9

It was less of a marathon and more of a two-thirds marathon,

1:01.8

if you will. Yes, I'll be honest, this was the reason I was more excited than usual to cover YC2 demo day this year.

1:08.0

It had about 240 companies, which is around 40% less than the winter 2022 batch.

1:15.0

So I think there was a little bit more signal in this batch as well as like what I would say is like a perfect

1:20.2

storm of other factors. It was the second batch to get a bigger check from YC.

1:25.9

They recently expanded their deal to 500K.

1:29.0

And it was the first back in person

1:31.2

or back primarily in person with around like 60 to 70 percent of founders being in the Bay Area for the

1:37.2

three month accelerator.
