Summary

Stage 4 was shorter, less technical, and less climb-heavy than other recent stages. Coupled with slightly cooler temperatures it offered a bit of a reprieve for racers, but it certainly wasn't without its challenges.

Welcome to the recap for stage four of Cape Epic 2021. Let's talk about the numbers right away.

0:05.6

This was one of the shorter stages, 45 miles or 73 kilometers, 5,413 feet of climbing

0:12.4

or 1,615 meters. That gives us a climate or distance ratio of 119 feet climb per mile

0:19.0

and 23 meters climb per kilometer. So that makes it so that it's kind of average for the majority

0:25.4

of the stages that we have, but definitely not the climiest, also not the flattest. This was a

0:30.9

point to point stage rather than a loop, meaning that we ended in a different spot. So we went

0:35.7

through different terrain, but really it wasn't anything unique. It was still a lot of rocky stuff,

0:41.6

some smooth stuff, a lot of farm roads, a lot of single or some single track. This one did have

0:47.8

a bit more road than previous sections and it started out with some longer road sections. So that

0:52.9

made it so that groups are tight and stuck together for the first half of the race. In terms of

0:58.0

weather, it was still pretty warm in the mid to high 80s Fahrenheit, got overcast toward the end

1:05.0

of the day, but was sunny for the majority of the day as a big rainstorm is coming in. So that's kind

1:10.2

of the basics on this course and now we'll hear from the teams to hear how everything went.

1:15.9

Stage four was I had the bad day yesterday and it was Brandon's turn this time to have a bad

1:21.5

day, but in a different way, it wasn't Brandon didn't have flat legs or anything, but nonetheless,

1:27.6

a lot of trials. Race started fast with the less climbing as well. There was just less. It was still

1:36.4

fast, but it wasn't too bad really in the beginning. And then once we hit a big mud puddle,

1:41.5

then I'm sure the other guests will talk about everything's strong out from there and Brandon and

1:45.3

I were moving forward in the race. Then we'll have a run in it. I somehow got a rock between my chain

1:52.2

ring and my chain and it... Well, I just thought I popped my chain off, no big deal, but put it back

2:01.3

on the next descent, my chain popped off again. At that point, John was way ahead. He turned around,

2:08.2

came back to me, mentioned that my chain had some sort of issue, but we were going to keep pushing
