Summary

Stage 3 of Cape Epic was brutally hot, extremely dry, and included the hardest climb of the entire race. But it was also less technical than the days that preceded it, and our racers were able to take advantage with strong performances.

Hey everybody and welcome to the Stage 3 recap of 2021 Cape Epic.

0:04.5

Today's stage was a very tricky one had the hardest climb of Cape Epic.

0:09.9

At least that's what the organizers are saying. We'll see there's a lot of racing left just the same.

0:13.7

But the stats on today's stage, 55 miles or 88 kilometers, 6,890 feet of climbing or 2100 meters of

0:21.4

climbing, that gives us 126 feet climb per mile or 24 meters climb per kilometer. So that's the

0:28.4

most climbing we've had yet, but not as much as stage 5, which still looms large. The conditions

0:34.8

are very dry. It was extremely hot today. A hundred degrees or roughly I think 38 degrees Celsius.

0:40.8

And that definitely took a toll. The dirt is really dry, crumbly kind of loose and really slippery

0:47.2

in a lot of sections. But the descents were more flowy than previous days. So that was a bit of a

0:52.1

break. We did have the Asahaibos downhill, which was very rudy and technical. So that was

0:58.0

something unique. A lot of organic soil. Very different from anything we ridden. And then the

1:02.3

Fonte's past climb was the extremely hard climb. So let's get into it and hear from the teams.

1:06.8

Yeah, so we finished stage 3 today. I think stage 2 yesterday was a yesterday.

1:12.9

Stage 2 yesterday was the queen stage and I was kind of anticipating that today is going to be

1:16.5

the queen stage. Just looking at the elevation graph, it looked tougher than yesterday. So in my

1:23.4

mind we went in, what I just went in, a bit scared for today. And we honest that paid off in the end

1:28.8

because it wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be. Which is a good thing. Yeah, how did it go?

1:36.8

Not too bad. We both finished. So we've got another stage tomorrow.

1:42.2

But both tests are negative as well. That's another good thing.

1:46.7

Mudrae's covert test, both negative, but vibes are positive. So that's good.

1:50.0

From my side, I kind of prefer today as kind of a fast-ish start, a couple of climbs,

1:57.1

a couple of little squeeze points. But like kind of an easy-going start for the first 20 odd

...
