Summary

This is the third session that focuses on the mystic, St. John of the Cross. In the tenor of the ancient practice of Lectio Divina, James Finley begins with a passage from St. John's The Ascent of Mount Carmel, and reflects on the qualitative essence of the spirit of this text. Greetings, everyone. Welcome to our time here together, turning for guidance to the

0:30.0

Christian Mystics and John of the Cross. We're in the midst of exploring his teachings of

0:40.0

our journey to perfect union with God in a passage through a dark night. And we left off

0:46.0

last time introducing the Ascent of Mount Carmel on how this, what attitudes we can foster

0:54.0

to cooperate with this dark night that brings us to the steep union with God. And we're,

1:45.0

it's the kind of thing you can return to over and over again as a kind of a grounding place.

1:50.0

So that's the nature of this session. And Kirsten and I will hopefully be helping you

1:58.0

to gain access to the graces that are in this chapter. So I'll begin with chapter 13,

2:05.0

article one, chapter 13. You said some consoles are in order that the individual may both know

2:14.0

the way of entering the night and be able to do so. And he goes on to say that this night,

2:24.0

which is this purifying process in which we're brought into the light of God,

2:30.0

has an active aspect and a passive aspect. The passive aspect is what makes it essentially mystical

2:37.0

and that it comes from God. And we started to look at that when we started with the three signs
