This is a special episode of the History of the World Podcast on the pre-Columbian mound builders of North America. Oh, Upon discovery of North America during the age of discovery, Europeans quickly found great earthwork mounds on the landscape and they were to be discovered far and wide throughout the North American

continent.

These mounds could range from tumuli which were typically circular and were similar to the burial

mounds found in Eurasia, not unlike the Kyrgyz of the Eurasian

step, to the earthwork mounds built in a particular shape such as the well-known

Serpent mound in Ohio.

The European immigrants had a range of options about who built these mounds and why,

with many speculating that they were built by a long gone but advanced society.

The thing that puzzled the European immigrants was at a good level of technological expertise and equipment

would have been needed to build these mounds in some cases and no evidence of

advanced technology existed.

It has taken modern science since the late 19th century to give a clearer picture of what these mounds

are who built them and how.
