Having a steady supply of beautiful annuals to dot around the garden is a real pleasure. But if like me, you'd rather avoid buying lots of big plastic trays of bedding plants,

then sewing from seed is essential.

There are so many annuals you can sew that will fill your garden with scent and colour

and save you a fortune, not to mention,

sewing from seed is

always better for the environment than buying mature plants from the garden centre, and it's

just more fun too.

Nicosciana Alata is a brilliant, vigorous annual, with very trendy pale green blooms that will light up your garden.

We get the word nicotine from Nicosiana, and this plant is, of course, known by its common name, the tobacco plant.

It sits in the Nightshade family, or Solonasi. It's a huge family containing all sorts of amazing plants,

from herbs and weeds to tomatoes and chilies, and a whole range of tobacco species too.

But I think more exciting than its connection to tobacco are the gloriously acid green flowers

that look like pale stars erupting from their slender trumpets.
